The Real Church Page 5

Roman Catholic Claim

His Church also teaches just one set of doctrines, which must be the same as those taught by the apostles (Jude 3). This is the unity of belief to which Scripture calls us (Phil. 1:27, 2:2).

Although some Catholics dissent from officially-taught doctrines, the Church’s official teachers—the pope and the bishops united with him—have never changed any doctrine. Over the centuries, as doctrines are examined more fully, the Church comes to understand them more deeply (John 16:12–13), but it never understands them to mean the opposite of what they once meant.

Christian Response

Rome does not teach one set of doctrines that were taught by the apostles. Very little of what Rome teaches is found in the Bible. The Bible is the only trustworthy source of doctrine. The doctrine of the apostles is embedded in the Bible. There is no such thing as an outside source equal to the Bible. In Rome, the chief source of doctrine is the Roman Catholic hierarchy. Not so for Christians. Christians trust the Bible alone for faith and practice. Rome has gone well beyond the Bible to formulate her heretical religion. The trustworthiness of the Bible is attested throughout history.

2TI 4:1 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom:

2TI 4:2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.

2TI 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires;

2TI 4:4 and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths.
